The Power of Showing Up: Why 2027 Is the Year to Attend an Industry Trade Show

For manufactured housing retailers and community owners, the opportunities ahead have never been greater. Here’s why getting out of the office and into the industry could be one of the smartest business decisions you make next year.

Let’s face it. Running a manufactured housing business is demanding. Between managing sales, working with customers, coordinating deliveries and installations, overseeing communities, and handling the countless details of daily operations, finding time to get away can be challenging.

But here’s a question worth considering: What opportunities might you be missing by staying behind your desk?

Every year, thousands of manufactured housing professionals attend industry trade shows to discover new products, learn new strategies, strengthen business relationships, and explore opportunities for growth. Many return home with ideas that can transform their businesses.

And with some of the most significant changes in manufactured housing’s history now underway, 2027 promises to be an especially important year to get involved.

An Industry on the Verge of Change

The passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act in July 2026 represents a major milestone for manufactured housing.

Among its most significant provisions is the elimination of the longstanding federal requirement that manufactured homes be built on a permanent chassis. The legislation also addresses manufactured housing financing and energy efficiency standards, potentially opening doors to new designs, construction methods, and market opportunities.

In October, HUD announced its Next Generation Manufactured Housing Action Plan, outlining steps toward modernizing the HUD Code and developing guidance for new forms of factory-built housing.

These changes won’t happen overnight, but their potential impact is enormous.

For retailers, they could eventually mean new home designs, additional product choices, and opportunities to serve customers who may not have previously considered manufactured housing. For community owners, evolving home designs and construction technologies could influence future development and expansion plans.

The question isn’t whether our industry will change. It’s how quickly individual businesses will recognize and respond to the opportunities.

And there’s no better place to stay connected with those changes than at an industry trade show.

See It, Touch It, Experience It

There’s something about walking through a new home that simply cannot be duplicated by viewing pictures online.

You can experience the floor plan, evaluate construction quality, examine finishes, and see firsthand how manufacturers are responding to changing consumer preferences.

You might discover a new model that fits your market perfectly, an innovative kitchen design that gives your sales team a competitive advantage, or an energy-efficient feature that resonates with today’s buyers.

For community owners, trade shows offer opportunities to evaluate homes that may be particularly well-suited for new developments, rental programs, or replacement of aging inventory.

Just as importantly, you can compare multiple manufacturers and products in one location, often while speaking directly with the people responsible for developing them.

These are the kinds of experiences that help you make better purchasing decisions and position your business for future success.

Learn From People Who Are Getting Results

One of the greatest benefits of attending a trade show isn’t necessarily found on the exhibit floor. It’s found in the conversations.

Imagine sitting down with a retailer from another state who has developed a successful strategy for converting internet leads into showroom appointments. Or meeting a community operator who has found a more effective approach to filling vacant sites.

Perhaps you’ll attend a seminar that introduces a practical application of artificial intelligence, a new financing opportunity, or a marketing strategy you can implement immediately.

These aren’t theoretical possibilities. They’re exactly the kinds of conversations and discoveries that happen when industry professionals come together.

And because many attendees operate in different geographic markets, they’re often willing to share ideas, experiences, and solutions.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel when someone else has already figured out how to make it turn more efficiently.

Your State Association Annual Meeting

Where the four shows previously mentioned are regional, national, or ever international, your state association meetings are local.  That makes them personal to you and your business.

Your state association advocates your business by lobbying state officials and policy makers to ensure our industry is represented when legislation is proposed that affects housing, transportation, and construction.

So don’t just attend these meetings, become involved in them. Volunteer to serve on committees; lend your voice and support. Your association works for you.

Relationships Still Matter

Trade shows build personal relationships through interactions that build trust, open doors, and create connections that often continue long after the show ends.

And sometimes, the most valuable opportunity you’ll discover isn’t on the official agenda. It’s the conversation you have with someone standing next to you in a model home or sitting across the table at lunch.

Turn Inspiration Into Action

Trade shows build personal relationships through interactions that build trust, open doors, and create connections that often continue long after the show ends.

But, attending a trade show is only the beginning.

The real value comes from what you do with the knowledge, ideas, and relationships you bring home.

Approach each event with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Ask questions. Attend educational sessions. Introduce yourself to people you don’t know. Look for ideas that challenge the way you’ve always done things.

And when you return home, identify two or three improvements you can put into practice.

Maybe it’s a new approach to lead follow-up, a different home model, an innovative product, or a relationship with a new business partner.

Small improvements can produce meaningful results over time.

Make 2027 the Year You Show Up

Manufactured housing is entering an exciting new chapter. Changes in federal legislation, advances in construction technology, and growing demand for affordable housing are creating opportunities that could reshape our industry.

But opportunities don’t automatically translate into success.

The businesses that thrive will be those that stay informed, embrace innovation, build strong relationships, and continually look for ways to improve.

Industry trade shows provide an extraordinary environment for doing exactly that.

So here’s my challenge: Before you get too busy planning everything else for 2027, put at least one industry trade show on your calendar.

Bring a colleague. Take plenty of notes. Ask questions. Meet new people. Challenge yourself to come home with at least three ideas that can make your business better.

You never know which conversation, new product, or unexpected discovery might become your next big opportunity.

Sometimes, the best way to move your business forward is to get out of the office and see what’s happening in the world around you.
