HOUSING ADVOCATE HIGHLIGHTS MANUFACTURED HOMES – A report about the advantages of manufactured homes and the development obstacles they face is in the works by the League of Women Voters of Corvallis, Oregon housing committee. Penny York, an LWV housing committee member, spoke about the forthcoming report before the Corvallis Planning Commission this past week.

“I’m very interested in ensuring the adequate supply of diverse types of affordable housing,” York said. “Both housing that is eligible for government assistance, and market-rate housing that can be priced within the reach of working families and others of limited means.”

A letter submitted to the planning commission states the housing committee recently met with city staff to gain more understanding about how manufactured housing could provide more opportunities in Corvallis for those struggling to find affordable housing close to employers.

The LWS’s housing position is focused on equity driving housing policy by creating opportunities that are available to all, regardless of economic status, and states that inclusion is needed for a vibrant community. She also cited goals for diversity under Imagine Corvallis 2040, the city’s vision statement.

COLORADO MOBILE HOME  COMMUNITY FINDS STABILITY IN SELF-GOVERNMENT – Despite their name, “mobile homes,” which house an estimated 18 million to 22 million people in the United States, are largely immobile and costly to move. For some mobile home (sic) park residents, a stable home comes with self-government. In one case in Colorado, it brought a stronger sense of community too.

Many residents own their homes but not the underlying land, for which they pay “lot rent.”  Media reports have shed light on private-sector purchases of mobile home/manufactured home parks that often result in rent increases, which housing advocates deem predatory.

An alternative is for residents to purchase their park. Recent legislation in Colorado has made this more possible. Residents must now be told their park is up for sale and be given 90 days after being notified to make an offer.

Last year, the residents of Animas View MHP Co-op in Durango, Colorado succeeded in buying their park for around $15 million.

Though the arrangement brings loans and responsibility for repairs, residents say the purchase has brought a sense of stability and strengthened their community.

“Ever since we made the co-op, we are meeting each other for the first time,” says resident Doug Harris, while working with fellow resident Kirby MacLaurin. “It’s true,” responds Mr.MacLaurin. “Best buds… what a find.”

The Animas View MHP Co-op is one of six resident-owned manufactured housing communities in Colorado.
