Clayton, America’s #1 Manufactured Home Builder, Acquires Privately-Owned Site Builder Brohn Homes

Clayton Homes, a Berkshire Hathaway company and by far the nation’s largest builder of manufactured homes, entered the site-built industry in 2015 through its Clayton Properties division with a goal to provide industry-leading home building solutions and improve the experience of modern day homebuyers.

Since 2015, Clayton has increased its homebuilder portfolio by acquiring like-minded, innovative companies in strong growth markets such as Oakwood Homes in Colorado and Utah, Harris Doyle Homes in Missouri, Goodwell Homes in Tennessee, and Chafin Communities in Atlanta.

According to a recent press release, Clayton has added another traditional home builder to that growing portfolio. on April 9, 2018, Clayton Properties Group®, a division of Clayton Home Building Group®,  announced it had acquired Brohn Homes, one of Austin, Texas’ largest privately-owned home builders.

Brohn Homes Doubled In Size From Its Inception In 2003 Through 2007

Co-Presidents and brothers Adam and Aaron Boenig founded Brohn Homes in 2003 as a custom home building business. Recognized for its innovation in design and architecture, Brohn Homes differentiates itself by providing unprecedented designs, quality craftsmanship, and unparalleled value to its current base.

The company has experienced tremendous growth since its inception, doubling its size from 2003-2007. Following the housing downturn in 2008, the Boenigs transitioned the company from a custom home builder to a production builder. In 2017, Brohn Homes started 254 homes, sold 270 and closed 253 homes in 12 communities. The company anticipates selling approximately 400 homes in 13 communities by the end of this year.

“After over a decade of building homes as a privately owned company, we are thrilled to join Clayton and become a part of their impressive homebuilding company,” said Adam Boenig. “We look forward to continuing our momentum of growth and innovation through this strategic partnership.”

“Brohn Homes immediately impressed us with their creativity and variety of homes,” said Keith Holdbrooks, president of Clayton Home Building Group. “Their willingness to try new ventures such as the innovative affordable line, Waterloo Homes, and focus on growth are areas of importance to our industry. The culture at Brohn Homes is a true testament to their emphasis on team member engagement and experience. We are a people company at Clayton, and Brohn Homes’ culture aligns with our steadfast commitment to team member experience.”

Will Clayton’s Dominance In Manufactured Homes Extend To On-Site Building?

There is every reason to assume Clayton will eventually become a dominant force in the site-built homes industry, much like their present and growing dominance of the manufactured homes industry. They are already one of the largest manufactured home builders in the nation.

How dominant is Clayton Homes? They produce homes from 36 home building facilities throughout the United States, at the rate of about 200 homes per day. Clayton homes are sold by approximately 450 company-owned, and around 1,200 independent, manufactured home retailers across the country. These retailers accounted for more than 48,000 homes in 2017 — 49% percent of all manufactured homes produced and sold. In addition, Clayton’s two company-owned mortgage brokerages financed well over one-half of all new manufactured homes sold last year. The company also builds and sells modular homes, tiny homes, college dormitories, military barracks, and apartments.
